How to support your child’s transition to Learning Ladder

How to support your child’s transition to Learning Ladder

The transition to childcare is an exciting process for both parents and children, but it’s also a big change that might take getting used to. Our educators and team are here to ensure you and your child have an enjoyable, calm and reassuring experience as you become part of the Learning Ladder ‘family’. However, there’s plenty you can do to help your little one feel comfortable and ready for this new environment before they even start:

1.    Talk about it.

Prepare your child for the transition to Learning Ladder by talking to them about what to expect. Talk to your child Explain that they will spend time with other children and adults and take part in exciting new activities. Visit the centre.

Our two-visit orientation program has been designed to help your child get accustomed to the environment at Learning Ladder and feel safe and secure before the transition. Your child will meet the educators and get a feel for the learning environment, daily routines and educational program. The orientation sessions will also provide opportunities for you to ask questions and share information about your child with the educators.

  1. Help your child choose a comfort item to bring.

Encourage your child to think about a comfort item, or multiple, that they may want to take with them to the centre, such as a favourite toy or blanket. This will help them feel more at ease in their new surroundings once they transition to Learning Ladder. You could make the experience fun by buying a ‘new, special bag’ and letting your child choose each item that will go into it.

3.    Stay positive.

Be positive when talking about the childcare experience, and focus on all the fun things your child will get to do. If you have any concerns, discuss them with our educators before your child starts at Learning Ladder.
Once your child starts at Learning Ladder

Here are our top tips for ensuring that your child’s transition to the childcare centre is smooth:

  1. Spend time with your child in their room when you arrive, and interact with the educators in front of your little one. If your child sees that you have a trusting, positive relationship with the educators, then they will feel safe and at ease.
  2. Say a quick goodbye to your child when you’re ready to leave, letting them know when you’ll be back.
  3. Build a routine around drop-off and pick-up times to help your child feel secure in knowing what to expect.
  4. Reconnect with your child at the end of each day, and ask them about what they did, what they enjoyed, a special moment, who they played with and so on.
  5. Be patient with your child, as it might take a little while for your child to feel completely at home in their new setting. Don’t get disheartened if there are setbacks; encourage your little one to keep trying. With a bit of time and patience, your child will soon love their new routine.

How we can help your child settle in

While each child, and family, is different, we’ve developed an overarching step-by-step process to make the transition to Learning Ladder as smooth as possible.

You are welcome to call or visit the centre to see how your child is settling in. You can also phone us whenever you’d like to talk about your child’s experience or progress at the childcare centre. If your child experiences separation anxiety, we are equipped and ready to help.
